Conventional Eggs

All egg farmers demand systems that provide our animals with comfortable and humane housing. Conventional, or caged, eggs come from hens living in cages with access to optimal temperature, humidity, feed, water and security. With only two percent of today’s U.S. population living on farms – America’s farmers produce food for 98 percent of us. The conventional system is designed for the welfare of the hen as well as for production efficiency.

In conventional systems:

  • The birds are more readily protected from the elements, disease and predators (including each other, via the proverbial “pecking order”)
  • Hens typically have fewer diseases and require less medication, only receiving them for therapeutic reasons
  • Research shows eggs have lower shell bacteria levels than eggs from specialty systems

Conventional egg production systems are by far the most cost-effective for you, resulting in store prices around $1.50 per dozen (specialty systems can drive prices as high as $3.00 per dozen or more.)
